We're calling this category of Internet geographic information systems "Basemaps Plus". The implication is that they include some generic feature data (hydrography, roads, county/state/national boundaries, etc) in addition to typical basemaps (orthophotos, topographic maps, elevation models, etc). These sites can be very useful for on-screen exploration and simple map-making projects.
